Lonely Planet are set to publish a useful compendium guidebook for Asian travellers that covers the main attractions of Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos.

Technically Lonely Planet: Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos and the Greater Mekong Region is not on sale until September 21st, according to Amazon.co.uk, but I saw a stack of copies today in a Bangkok bookshop. This new LP guidebook provides a useful overview of the most popular parts of these these countries which are often visited as part of the South East Asian circuit. I’d imagine most of the info has been culled from the bigger, individual country guidebooks, but there is a special section dedicated the ancient monuments and ruins that can be found in this region, including Laos’ Plain Of Jars and of course, Cambodia’s Angkor Wat. The book apparently also covers part of northern Thailand and China’s Yunnan area, hence the “Greater Mekong region” tag.

Lonely Planet are certainly moving fast for such a big company to keep up with the way travellers are accessing information. Guidebooks aren’t going to disappear any time soon, but this sort of remixing of content where several countries are combined and popular traveller routes are explicitly covered makes sense to keep up with the rise of online travel info.

If anyone at Lonely Planet wants to send me a review copy, I’ll be more than happy to write a longer article about it ;-)
